What is regenerative medicine?
Regenerative medicine is the use of your own blood or bone marrow components to create natural body tissue to repair or replace dead or damaged tissue. Patients can need regenerative medicine for many reasons, the main ones being:
- Natural aging process
- Disease
- Sports injury
- Accident
- Congenital defects
Regenerative medicine, which includes both stem cell therapy and PRP therapy, can help you function at your peak again. It's a way to take advantage of your body's innate healing capabilities.
What is PRP therapy?
In PRP therapy, your Pain Medicine Consultants physician takes a small amount of blood from your arm and places it in a high-tech centrifuge. The centrifuge spins your blood at extremely high speed to separate it into its several components.
Your doctor safely disposes of the red blood cells, which don’t contain platelets, and places the PRP into a syringe. Using ultrasound or X-ray guidance, the doctor injects your PRP into the place where you need it. For example, if you have a torn ligament that’s causing pain and movement problems, your doctor injects the PRP all around the ligament.
Doctors also use PRP during surgical repairs, stitching it into wounds to enhance healing. With PRP, you’ll heal more quickly, and this means less pain and improved mobility within around 4-6 weeks. Your PRP benefits can last a year or longer.
What is stem cell therapy?
In stem cell therapy, your doctor takes a small amount of bone marrow from your hip while you’re under local anesthesia. This bone marrow contains stem cells, which are the body’s “building block” cells, capable of morphing into any type of cell in your body.
When stem cells are in a certain area, they can become the necessary type of cells to regenerate dead or damaged tissue. Stem cell therapy can help with tendon, ligament, muscle, even bone healing.
Your Pain Medicine Consultants physician uses a centrifuge to extract the stem cells from your bone marrow, and then uses ultrasound or X-ray guidance to place the stem cells where you need regeneration.
Stem cells can go to work within 2-6 weeks, and you could experience continued benefits for as much as a year or longer.
